A swashbuckling good time with pirates? A fairytale afternoon with princesses? A tropical luau? Whatever your theme—silly, simple or sophisticated—we have some ideas and venues to help you throw an exciting birthday bash for everyone to enjoy, including Mom and Dad.

Do you have a child who loves to run around, but you are not in love with the idea of hosting a home party? A celebration at a local park or zoo may be just the ticket. A scavenger hunt, Olympics theme or obstacle course can keep the guests busy and happy. The National Children’s Castle located in Omotesando is also designed specifically for the young and energetic. And for those little tumblers who love music and movement? The party package at My Gym Children’s Fitness Center may be just the answer.

Does your child like to get her hands dirty? Try a cooking class! Create a menu (or hire an instructor) for the guests to make. Goody bags can include cooking utensils, a homemade apron and recipe. Or, take your shoes off at the door, clear off the coffee table and let the Tokyo tea party begin, complete with origami, chopsticks, paper fans, etc. If your son or daughter prefers gardening (and if you have a patio or back yard), visit your corner florist and pick up plants, soil, and pots. Guests will have fun assembling their own floral arrangement. And, of course, there’s always the perennial messy favorite: make your own ice cream sundaes.

For creative kids, there are also plenty of options. Professional entertainers feature magic, comedy, and interactive activities to make the day extra special. For youngsters who love stuffed animals, a great offsite option is the Build-A-Bear Workshop. Guests make (and bring home) their own stuffed animal friend. For older kids, a visit to the spa for a manicure will make the day shine.

Finally, for parents looking for a group activity for a pre-teen or teenager, a trip to an amusement park, sporting event, movies or water park is ideal. For less expensive options, check out the indoor batting cages near Meji Jingu Stadium. Like to bowl? EST Amusement Center, Shibuya [Tel: (03) 3409-4721] features black-light bowling, plus floors with ping-pong, video games, and more. And, for the budding pop stars in the family, book a private party at a karaoke bar, such as Fiesta International Karaoke Bar and become a star for the night.

For party supplies, decorations and favors, a favorite one-stop shop is Tokyu Hands. You’ll find banners, balloons, games, goody bag treats, costumes, craft ideas, colorful paper goods, plus anything else you may need. Pick up an English pamphlet and have fun shopping. Stores are located throughout Tokyo; the flagship store is in Shibuya. www.tokyu-hands.co.jp/index.htm (Japanese).
