Toying around

Athough Tokyo has a lot of activities for expat children,  the amount of choices are still limited compared to home countries, where the families can speak the host country’s local language,” admits Julie Russel, who, together with another expat mom, started the Lego Club.

The club meets every Saturday and is aimed at  providing an opportunity for kids  to socially interact with other children and create a regular and creative exercise. Consisting of various coloured bricks which come in different forms,  the 8, 4 and 6-studded blocks are  joined together to build anything the kid wants to create. Lego products have gotten better and better over the years with sets like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Bionicles and Taj Mahal becoming so popular.

The Lego Club today has eight eager boys participating every week accepting the challenge to design a particular theme for 60 minutes. In the past, the group has put together buildings, animals, future transportation, etc. Currently, the boys are collectively building  the Taj Mahal, the biggest of all the Lego models which comes in 5,920 brick pieces. Some of the kids building it  have actually been to the real Taj Mahal which works to their advantage.

The second half of the meeting requires the boys to present what they have created. The positive feedback kids get helps build their confidence and helps them feel motivated to do the next theme. Photos taken at each meeting are loaded up on to the club’s website, which they can very well brag about to their friends.

Lego meetings are fun, entertaining, and above all, not difficult to coordinate. Start one in your area and discover the creative streak in your child!
