Summerhill International School

By on December 29, 2009

When seeking the right schools for their kids, parents need to educate themselves as well. Let Tokyo Families help you out there! This month, we learn about Summerhill International School, in the heart of Moto Azabu. TF spoke to Monique Keller.

1. What is the Summerhill International School & Preschool?

We are a private international preschool and kindergarten in Moto-Azabu offering the highest standard of age-appropriate education. We cater to the foreign community in Tokyo. Our preschool promotes a safe, nurturing and happy environment that provides a positive and memorable experience to all of our children.

Our kindergarten program recognizes that children will soon be entering schools that have a range of expectations for a child’s social and academic performance. Summerhill Kindergarten provides a comprehensive, learning-centered approach that challenges children and supports all areas of development. We recognize both the value of an emergent curriculum and the need for directed, sequential instruction to ensure that children enter first grade with the skills and knowledge expected of them at the school that they will enter.

2. What is unique about Summerhill?

Our facilities, location, and the amount of care we put into our program.

3. What kind of children to you cater to?

We cater mainly to international children, but will accept up to 30% Japanese students.

4. What kind of programs are offered?

We have a preschool for children starting 15 months to 5 ½ years old, and a kindergarten for children ages 5 to 6 ½ year old.  We  have also just opened our after-school Summerhill Studies Programs, which are open to outside students.

The Summerhill Studies Programs cater to children ages 4 to 12 years old and include:

   – ESL for Japanese students

   – Art for Kids program

   – Advanced English (reading and phonics)

   – Japanese for beginners

   – Homework Aid and one-on-one tutoring

We also have very exciting Summer and Winter Programs that run during the holidays.

5. What is the Summerhill Studies Program?

This is a series of new programs that start after school from 2:30pm until 6pm. The programs are designed to give your child help where your child needs it. The programs provide tutoring and supplemental education services to students of a wider range and skill level. Our teachers will tailor-make and individualize learning plans that build skills, habits, and attitudes that students need to succeed in school and in life.

6. Are there any extracurricular activities or special services available?

Yes, we have a variety of extracurricular activities in our after-school program, including: Our very own soccer team which is very popular, piano, yoga, cooking, dance and drama, book club, and Jolly Phonics. Other services include a Morning Pick-Up System, Early Birds, and babysitting.

7. Tell us about the Summerhill Soccer Team.

Three years ago, we started the Summerhill Soccer Team class, and it turned out to be one of the most popular classes. We teach soccer at a fenced-in field in the park, which is great for the team’s practices twice a week.  We are looking for other teams of the same age group for a good match. Anyone?
