Too much screen time?

Toddlers best absorb the world around them by what they see. Here are tips on how to stimulate your kids’ minds and ensure their well-being.

Screen addiction

One study in the United States claims television still remains the media of choice among young children, with kids younger than 8 watching 45 minutes of television each day.

Although kids left lazing on the sofa watching TV on a constant basis may free up time for parents to finish off  their chores at home,  it is also setting children up for failure.  A sedentary life can affect a child’s brain development.

Child development experts in Japan advise parents not to allow young children prolonged screen time. The Children’s Living Environment Improvement Committee of the Japanese Academy of Pediatrics reports that social development and speech delay are common in small children who watch TV and video for a long time. There have been cases where improvements were seen by spending less screen time. They also warn parents that watching the media for a long time may have a negative impact on children’s mental as well as physical and social development.

Healthy detachment to screens should always be a parent’s call regardless of how good a negotiator your child is.

Toddler sleep

According to pediatric sleep specialists, poor sleep habits in children are bad for memory rentention and problem-solving skills.  Put young children on a routine. Turn off games, the television or computers 30-40 minutes before sleep time.  Electronic devices stimulate brain activity and keep them awake.  Instead, put on soothing age-appropriate music or light up a lavender-scented candle to calm down the busy mind.

Playing together

Children who play together learn important social skills.  They learn about taking turns, and how to be both a good loser and winner.  They also learn the value of respect for others.  It is important that parents encourage group play as opposed to solo.

Building blocks

All toys entertain but only few educate.  Block toys are your best bet when choosing a toy for a young or older child. It helps develop spatial ability, promotes logical thinking, and helps teamwork when played with friends.  Many building blocks today are colorfully designed to help attract and hold children’s attention.
