Cupcakes, anyone?

I am from London and believe it or not, I used to work in finance, but I gave up my job to follow my husband who was transferred back to Tokyo. I arrived last year.

When I came to Tokyo, I was taken aback by the rich and diverse desserts that are available in Japan. However, there seemed to be a gap between the highly sophisticated, expensive French pastries and the simple, ubiquitous doughnuts. For me, cupcakes fill this gap because they are the perfect treat. Cupcakes are just great homely treats for all occasions.  In pursuit of quality cupcake treats in classic flavours such as lemon, coconut and raspberry, carrot and walnut with cream cheese frosting, I decided to bring this wonderful city a real alternative with Bella’s Cupcakes.

Being the owner of Bella’s Cupcakes Tokyo, I find myself being involved with every aspect of the business.  I spend pretty much all my time baking, selling, and promoting Bella’s Cupcakes.  I have been cooking and baking since I can remember, always having the baking bug from my mother.  At the age of 12, I was baking fruit cakes and cookies for guests every weekend and spending hours on decorating cupcakes.

What makes our cupcakes special is that they are uniquely light and fluffy, which makes them quite irresistible and our customers keep telling us that unlike other desserts, they can quite easily have more than a few. We also use the best ingredients such as pure Madagascar Bourbon vanilla and premium cocoa to make sure that our cupcakes are always great-tasting.

We started our business as an online order business operating from our kitchens in Minami Aoyama and have now slowly increased this to include a mobile cupcake van which is located in Hiroo on Fridays and selective Saturdays and Kawasaki on Sundays, and the Daikanyama Hillside Pantry. We see the cupcake van as our mobile shop front where we bring our cupcakes to our customers. We are also looking for more locations so if you would like to see our cupcake van anywhere near you, send your request to: hello@bellas-tokyo.com. We also deliver cupcakes.

We  cater for weddings, events, parties and corporate promotional events. This summer we found ourselves making cupcakes for various Sex and The City premier parties, photo shoots, and various other events.  Our customers are also given a choice of ten flavours plus additional seasonal flavours to choose from.  Customers  can choose to design their own box of  “to-go” for one of the gift box sets for girls, boys, ladies, parties, loved ones or personalized message boxes as they like. The great thing about cupcakes are that they can be designed and decorated for any occasion or purpose… which makes a great way of sending messages. We had a fun order the other day  where the message was  “Oh my god you did it!”

What’s something people probably don’t know about cupcakes?

Cupcakes date back as far 1828  when mentioned in Eliza Leslie’s Recipe Cookbook and have only recently become extremely popular in England, the US, and Australia, so I guess it’s about time they had their share of the limelight in Tokyo.
