The American School in Japan

“An ASIJ education. What does it mean?”

An ASIJ education means excellence and meeting our mission of deve-loping compassionate, inquisitive learners, prepared for global responsibility.  We achieve this by offering an exemplary academic program, by engaging students in an array of activities, including the Fine Arts, sports, and community service. At ASIJ, we teach the “whole” child within a diverse setting that allows them to grow emotionally, socially, and intellectually.  We are dedicated to the purpose of developing leaders for the future who are passionate about service to others and to the health of our planet.

The American School in Japan has a legacy of over one hundred years of providing excellence in education for families residing within the greater Tokyo area.  We provide a specialized early education program at our Early Learning Center in Roppongi and a full K-12 program on our spacious Chofu campus.

Learning and living in Japan are essentials to our students’ education at ASIJ, and the study of Japanese Language, field trips throughout Japan and Tokyo, and community service within Japan give our students authentic experiences in which to learn and grow.

ASIJ has a strong sense of community, and parents are both welcome and are engaged in numerous activities on both of our campuses through our PTA, Booster Club, Friends of the Fine Arts, and other opportunities to enrich the experience of ASIJ families.

ASIJ has a strong history of preparing students to gain admission to the most prestigious universities in the world, including top-tier colleges in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Japan.

Over the next four years, ASIJ is completing its master plan for the Chofu campus, which will include an expansion of co-curricular facilities, additional curriculum opportunities, such as robotics and design technology, and the creation of a Japan Center to continue to enrich the learning of Japanese language and culture.  In addition, the technology enhanced campuses in both Roppongi and Chofu will continue to integrate technology in the classrooms through 1:1 laptop programs and other innovative uses of technology.  It is a great time to be an ASIJ student or parent.

Canadian International School

Technology is an integral part of the curriculum at Canadian International school Tokyo. As an IB World School, CIS utilizes the Internet for inquiry-based learning and research. In the primary years, students are encouraged to use a wide variety of programmes to create interactive projects that can be shared with other grades as well as with their parents.  Senior students are often to be found individually or in pairs researching information for such diverse subjects as physics or social studies for class presentations. Our library uses software that allows parents and children to search at home for books and reserve them to be picked up at school by the student.  In addition to one computer lab each for the elementary and secondary sections, a number of classes have at least one computer in the room for easy access.

CIS communicates with its parents on a weekly basis through the Friday Flyer, which is available on the school’s website.  The school is in the process of posting curriculum details for all grades on the website for current and prospective parents’ information; this will also include a link to the Ministry of Education in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, allowing parents to look at the curriculum outcomes for Kindergarten to grade 12.

Teachers emphasize to their students that technology is a tool which, if used appropriately and judiciously, can support their learning in a variety of ways. In order to protect our students, social networking and other sites are blocked so that there is no temptation for misuse.

Nishimachi International School

“A Nishimachi education. What does it mean?”

You put children together from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds on one small campus in the middle of Tokyo and teach them tolerance and patience, to respect differences. You teach them two languages and expose them to many cultures. You teach them that it’s not easy to solve problems, that there are just as many sides to an issue as there are individuals involved, and that, by exploring the various sides and letting everyone have a say, sometimes problems can be solved. The goal is for them to begin to grasp the complexity of the world—and to be comfortable with themselves and others, regardless of race or nationality.

Over the years, Nishimachi’s curriculum has earned a reputation for excellence. For over six decades the school has educated its students to be international and independent thinkers. The educational program (in English and Japanese) places as strong an emphasis on skills such as adaptability, flexibility, collaboration, analysis, cross-cultural sensitivity, and communication, as it does on content. As a result, Nishimachi alumni are well prepared to meet the challenges of higher education, demanding careers, and a changing world.

Numerous group activities for students and parents outside the classroom create a vibrant sense of community. Children participate in co-curricular programs such as sports, music and drama, and computers. Older students take annual trips outside Tokyo. They plant rice. They learn to ski. Cultural activities and community service opportunities abound. Parents are involved on many level and are an integral part of school life.

Over the next five years, the school will be directing its energies toward enhancing student learning across every grade level by making refinements in curriculum, instruction, assessment, and the use of information technology, as well as increasing opportunities for students to develop, personally, physically, and artistically.

Eton School

A famous Chinese proverb goes like this: “Tell me but I’ll forget; show me so I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand.” It is through such involvement of play and experiential learning that a child’s early educational foundation is built. EtonHouse offers “Inquire, Think, Learn” curriculum, inspired by the Italian Reggio Emilia approach, which was named as the world’s best early childhood program by Newsweek. Located next to Tokyo Midtown, the preschool also offers an outstanding Chinese program to help children develop competence in the language. The Tokyo branch is our 24th school in seven countries across Asia. We are open for enrollment.

PAL International School

We at PAL understand that parents go through a lot of pain looking for the right preschool that suits their needs.  When we asked parents why they chose PAL, the top three answers were:

1) PAL is like a second home.  It maintains a low student-teacher ratio, thus our kids receive optimum quality of care and warm attention.

2) PAL is flexible. It provides age-appropriate experiences for children 6 months to 6 years, allowing kids to learn by experiment and provide make-up days, extended child care and many afternoon classes that are convenient to children and parents. Also hot nutritious school lunches are available.

3) PAL caters to every child! Quality childcare is essential. High tuition is not!
