Why children need summer learning programs

By on March 31, 2011

Summer learning program is recommended to parents as a tool to help identify and bring out a specific talent in their children and develop it into a skill.  Afterschool programs give particular attention to a child’s interest whether they are educational or recreational in nature.  They are given less emphasis in a mainstream curriculum. and that is why they are referred to as after school programs.    The purpose of having children take extra curricular activities in summer is to keep those brain cells actively engaged during the formative years,  preparing them to respond positively throughout the learning years.

Essentially, a good after school program aids the child to explore his/her field of interest. He or she is introduced to new things, interesting and challenging.   Mastering a new art form or a new skill allows them to have a sense of accomplishment which helps build the child’s self-esteem.  It also introduces your child to future career choices.  A child attending a ballet class may decide one day that she will want to make a career out of it and be the best ballerina in town. With this information, parents will know to which direction they want to support the child.

Another great advantage of after school programs is the socialization part. Children get to meet other children who are either  different  or are similar in interests or background and foster new friendships.   A karate class while living in Japan or a soccer class can equally be beneficial to children in having a sense of affiliation or belonging to a certain group learning the same craft.  Many of these programs coach children values on teamwork, performances or matches, agility, individuality and competitiveness.   Performing on stage or playing a match for an audience can be a great memorable experience for a young child.

After school programs keep your teenager busy and focussed on the job at hand.  It can be a review or remedial classes to make up for a failing grade in academic subjects he needs to work on.  By making their minds constantly active and focussed, they are expected to increase their knowledge and eventually see an improvement in their academic grades.

Many children are put into recreational after school programs so that they reduce weight and remain balanced and healthy.

A good after school program has many benefits. It keeps the child entertained as well as busy, and thus prevents children from becoming addicted to TVs and PCs. By giving them ways to burn up their excess energy and explore their creativity, after school programs help to shape the overall personality of the child.
