Summer school programs

By on April 2, 2012
It is still a few months away before the summer break but parents may already have started their to-do list.  Much of what goes on that list depends on how parents feel about a three-month school break.

In a study made by researchers at John Hopkins University in the United States, a 65% gap in achievement was because of unequal summer learning experiences during the elementary school years of poor and children with means. The same study shows that going to summer school  helps a child focus on enriching his knowledge.

A well-designed summer program can offer children the opportunity to learn new skills and additional hours of practice and recreation.   But what should parents be looking for in a summer school program?   A good summer program must be able to:

– increase the  academic achievement of a child.  If a child is weak in mathematics, the number of hours a child puts in a specific subject of study will make a positive difference in his academic grade.

– stimulate the motivation to learn .  Programs that appeal to
children make them more engaged learners.

– encourage children to forge meaningful relationships with teachers and co-learners.   It gives children the opportunity to overcome shyness by having a social interaction with people outside the family.

– develop new skills.   Makes children more confident.

– promote social connections.   Meeting new children at school makes learning more fun.

– expose children to new experience.   New experience enriches knowledge and create pleasant childhood memories.
