SRO at the Tokyo Jazz Festival
World renowned names in jazz: Burt Bacharach, Joe Sample, and Take Five among others, were in town last month to entertain a huge crowd of jazz enthusiasts at the Tokyo Jazz Festival with their rendition of timeless hits. Still going
strong at 84, Burt Bacharach and his team of super talented musicians and vocalists made a side trip to the Billboard Live Tokyo where he dished out a beautiful arrangement of medleys from his greatest hits album, for a limited one- night show.

The Medecins du Monde (Doctors of the World Japan), a French humanitarian aid organization based in Japan that has been active since the 1995 Kobe earthquake,
has operations for the homeless people in the Ikebukuro district.

The NPO’s popular mission is Operation Smile (OS) : a reconstructive surgical mission in different developing countries : they are one of MdM’s key international missions.

Japanese teams have worked not only in Asia but in Africa with the teams from other countries providing free surgical operations to children who suffer from cleft lip and palate, bear congenital deformities or who have been left scarred by the effects of war or accidents. The wounds are not only physical, they often suffer terrible social isolation.  A simple surgical operation can put a smile back on their faces and allow them to lead a normal and healthier life.  One in two medical interventions has changed the life of each patient.  Partners and sponsors are greatly needed in its various projects.  To get involved,  http://mdm.or.jp/english/index.html

Drama meet-up group for children
Is your child beginning to show interest in acting?  Would you like to get involved in his / her development but don’t know how? Here’s good news.  Meme Communications recently launched the Tokyo Junior Playhouse,  an all-English drama meet-up group where the stars of the show are children.  Modeled after community theatres in Europe and the United States, Tokyo Junior Playhouse aims to promote cultural exchange among children using theatre as medium.  It is currently offering drama classes under the guidance of professional theatre actors  where children can have a chance to interact with kids of cultural backgrounds other than their own. Participants are Japanese Elementary school children as well as kids from America, United Kingdom, Indonesia  and various countries. To sign up, members  pay a fee of ¥1,000 per meet and ¥1,500 for non-members.  TJP is currently gearing up for an upcoming Christmas play with the goal of raising funds for the CAMPFIRE project (camp-fire.jp).

Tokyo Junior Playhouse is recognized by the Setagaya-ku Kokusai Heiwa Koryu Shikindosei Jigyo, a government body in Setagaya ward promoting community projects to foster the spread of peace and international exchange.
