Tokyo International Children’s Choir

By on May 7, 2013

The Tokyo International Children’s Choir (TICC), a newly launched not-for-profit children’s choir celebrates the conclusion of its first season in May this year. Dr. Steven Morgan, long-time British Embassy Choir music director, conducts the choir. The TICC provides elementary and middle school children with a fun and high-quality opportunity to learn musical and life skills over the course of the academic school year from September through May. Children audition at the end of August and have the opportunity to participate in weekly hour-and-a-half rehearsals, which include thirty minutes of a cappella solfege (or voice training and music theory), followed by an hour of singing with an accompanist.

TICC is a rare platform to interact with children from a variety of linguistic, cultural and academic backgrounds. Children learn how to shine individually while being part of the group and contributing to something larger than themselves. The choir performs a variety of musical genres in a variety of languages. The TICC also bridges the wealth of communities and cultures in Tokyo as an inter-international school children’s choir and welcomes members from the local community.

This spring,  the TICC enjoyed a mini-performance fundraising opportunity at Frijoles Restaurant in Azabu Juban. Fun was had by both the choristers and the customers alike!  To hear the TICC sing,www.tokyochildrenschoir.com.

The TICC, which has recently become a part of the Tokyo Choral Consortium comprised of the Tokyo Embassy Choir (the former British Embassy Choir) and the Tokyo Chamber Singers, holds two major performances a year: a concert in November and one in May. The upcoming May concert will be held at the Franciscan Chapel Center on Saturday, May 18th at 2:00 pm and will feature some medleys from Oliver and the Sound of Music.

Auditions for the 2013-2014 Season will also take place at SPILC on Wednesday, August 28th from 6:00 pm. One of the highlights of the coming season will be to join the Tokyo Embassy Choir in performing Carmina Burana on Sunday, December 8, 2013. The venue is the highly sought out Ishibashi Memorial Hall in Ueno Park, often used for sound recordings.
