Fancy something different to the usual stroll in the park then head for Mt. Takao to the annual fire walking festival, Hiwatari-sai. Held at Yakuoin temple set on Mt.Takao, marvel at the Yamabushi monks as they walk across the burning embers of the sacred Goma fire. There is no need to stand on the sidelines, spectators are encouraged to join in the fun. First pray for you and your families’ safety (you might need it) and then gingerly walk over the smoldering trees. It’s all very theatrical with no real fear of burning (so they say!) but requires a bit of mind control nevertheless. The only advice the monks give is to bring a towel to clean your feet afterwards.
