Money isn’t everything. Shinise don’t make it all about profit. Enduring companies both in Japan and around the world have a central belief, principle, purpose, or credo beyond making money that is at the core of their company. There is no one right core ideology. Some companies make customer service, quality products or, employee well-being the central driving force. Others make innovation, risk-taking, or even truth-telling the essence of what they are all about and how they are trying to make a difference in the world. Being dedicated to something beyond making money drives employee performance and loyalty, attracts and retains customers, and fuels the product and service “legends” that marketing professionals normally struggle to replicate. The reason that marketing professionals have such challenges replicating what enduring companies naturally seem to do is that this core ideology cannot be faked. It must come from values, passions, and principles that are embedded deeply within the company culture, not from marketing campaigns that are painted on as a showpiece. While you might get one sale from this type of marketing, if the product and the entire process of dealing with your company are not consistent with the brand promise made in your marketing, you will not only fail to generate repeat business, you may even generate negative reviews that will turn away future business from new potential customers.
