Children’s House Montessori School opens

By on May 6, 2015
“Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment.
An advocate of Montessori principles and values, Maki Sugamata, a Montessori-qualified teacher with over 15 years’ experience teaching children from birth to age 6, opened a new school in Minami Aoyama.. She called it Children’s House. Its brightly lit and spacious classroom embodies the Montessori concept designed to stimulate learning and discovery.
Tokyo families spoke with her to learn more about the programs offered at the school.

What programs are open to children at Children’s House Montessori School and what ages are they for?
We are an international school using English curriculum. Children’s House has an Infant Class for children ages 1-3 and Primary Class for ages 3-6. The program is from 8:30 am until 3pm.
Children’s House welcomes involvement by parents.

Tell us about a typical day-to-day activity at the school and what Montessori learning materials and equipment are available to children?
We have a typical Montessori work cycle in the morning (practical life, math, sensorial, language, culture and music), trip to the park, lunch, nap time, group time, and home time. All materials and furnitures are Montessori based and have been carefully sourced to provide the best Montessori environment.

IMG_0174How’s the napping schedule at your school?
Children prepare for their nap after they have eaten their lunch. Shutters are closed and soft music is played to create a calm, sleeping environment. As children wake up, they are taken to the playroom until all children are awake as not to disturb the children who need a longer nap.

Tell us about your teaching staff.
All our directresses are Montessori trained.

What emergency measures are in place at the school in case of fire, earthquakes, etc?
We are extremely lucky to be within minutes of Aoyama Gakuin University which is the major evacuation location for Minami Aoyama area. We have a well-thought-out evacuation plan which we regularly practise with the children for all emergency situations. Emergency headgear is located under the children’s desks, staff are First Aid-trained and we have well-stocked emergency supplies.

Do you offer extended hours for working mums? What are the payment terms at your school? Do you offer sibling discounts?
Children’s House offers extended hours care from 3-6 pm at 1,600 yen per hour for enrolled students. Tuition can be paid yearly or split termly. We also offer a 10% discount for siblings.

IMG_0105Expatriate families are global nomads. In case kids are pulled out due to relocation, how much notice does the school require and what are your rules on refund?
Tuition refund is made on a term basis, the school must receive a request for a refund in writing 30 days before the first day of the following term to be eligible for a refund.

What makes Children’s House Montessori School unique?
Children’s House is truly a ‘Children’s House’; small but spacious with great attention to authentic Montessori methods. An extension to our Primary classroom is our garden with a majestic cherry blossom tree, encouraging children to enjoy nature which is hard to come by in Tokyo.
We accept children from walking and encourage toilet training early on, setting us apart from regular preschools. The school is founded and run by a passionate Montessori teacher.
