Wa Kitchen Kanna
Kakigori used to be sold only in summer until some vendors got creative with taste and texture, two things that matter most in Japan to stay on top of the game. Wa Kitchen Kanna, a kakigori shop and restaurant located in Setagaya-ku, is now on its third year yet the long queues have not died down. All eyes are on its unique kakigori offerings that change every season. Last year in autumn, it featured a pumpkin flavored shaved ice topped with mascarpone cheese sauce that became a hit. While most of Kanna’s flavors taste good, Strawberry Yogurt and Purple Yam are, no doubt, winners.

Ice Monster Mango sensation

Mango Sensation
Taiwan-born Ice Monster opened its first shop in April this year at Omotesando. Ice Monster’s attempt to evangelize kakigori in Japan by presenting it with a gourmet touch has been well-received, people still queue up rain or shine to get in. When you get the chance, try the Mango Sensation, a truly refreshing dessert with pana cotta, mango sherbet and syrup. Ice Monster has set up a pop-up shop at the Mercedes Benz connection in Roppongi for a limited period until Aug. 30.

あずきや安堂 Macha

Macha (Green tea )
People queue up at Adzukiyaandou almost every single day and not without good reason. This tiny shop located just 55 meters away from the Kichijoji station dishes out the best-tasting green tea shaved ice in town. The shop’s best guarded secret is in its syrup. The green tea remains to be one of the best sellers. Top it with adzuki beans and mochi (rice balls) and you can experience a quintessential Japanese dessert.
