We found the most delicious doughnuts off the beaten track

By on October 2, 2015

We have been conditioned by marketing that the best-tasting doughnuts in Tokyo are close to high traffic areas with a U.S. franchise name. But we learned that that’s not always the case. Thanks to my family’s bloodhound-like tracking instinct, we found Haritts, a small doughnuts store tucked away in a narrow alley off  Yoyogi Uehara shotengai (traditional arcade).

As the rivalry for the sweet comfort food heats up, donuts have undergone a big transformation over the years. Compared to western style doughnuts that come in a variation of specialized glazing and elaborate toppings, Haritts’s  are a mix of old fashioned and artisanal cooking with the right amount of sweetness, lightness and fluffiness. Flavors are not as many as in other Tokyo doughnut joints but sugar addicts will agree that the quality makes up for the lack of variety.  Flavors come in plain (¥136), cream cheese (¥231), Sweet 65 (¥210), Cinamon (¥157), Macha (¥231). Goma (Sesame), (¥189), Earl Grey (¥210), Plain Cacao (136), Carrot & Honey (¥199), and Kabocha (Pumpkin) ¥210.

Highly recommended:  Goma and Cream Cheese.  Pair it with a cup of hot cocoa for a heavenly experience.
