Emergency Daycare from 2 mos to 6 years old: AI PORT

Life can be challenging in a foreign country with kids to look after and no family around to turn to for emergency child care.

There are of course a few options available but rarely on short notice. The good news is Ai Port’s got your back. And it’s cheap.

One of the perks of living in Minato-ku is AI Port, a childcare support service run by the government in Minami-Aoyama. It’s an indoor play center designed for children ages 2 months to 6 years of age, accompanied by parents and is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm.

AI Port has two ‘Mommy and me’ programs and a Daycare facility:   Mommy and Me program is a Gardening and outdoor play.  The Indoor Mommy and me play is held inside an activity room that has a good stock of quality wooden toys and a ball pit.

AI-port also offers Temporary and Emergency Daycare services for children ages 2 months to 6 years of age. The place is open from 9 am to 9 pm daily. The rates are ¥800/hour between 9 am and 6 pm, and ¥1,200/hour for early morning use (7:30 – 9 am); late evening hours ( 6 – 9 pm) and holidays.

The most convenient thing about Ai Port is that in emergency cases, parents can pop by on the same day even without a reservation. If you know beforehand that you will be needing childminding help for longer-than-a-day, AI Port will open up spaces to those who make a reservation, subject of course to availability. Renewal is done on a day-to-day basis.

To register, Minato ward residents have to pay ¥500 and ¥1,000 for those who do not live in Minato ku. You will be required to show your residence card (Zairyu) or health insurance card when you sign up. After you fill in the membership card, write your name, and your child’s name on the little square pieces of paper provided to put into the name tags (elephant for children and flower for adults).

When you leave, pick up your members card, and file your name squares for your next visit.
